sea to sea to sea make-a-long

a quick note: the sea to sea to sea make-a-long is officially on hiatus after 4 years of operation, but we encourage you to continue using its guidelines to help you dive into new making projects! thank you for participating, and we can’t wait to see what you make.

how can we best celebrate the canadian fibreshed?

by making all the things! join from field to skin for the annual sea to sea to sea make-a-long and celebrate canadian sourced and produced textiles in all their glory.

join the creative coven community to find ash’s natural dye recipes and plant profiles for homegrown, foraged, and trade dyes in the community’s colour journal.

when is it?

whenever you want

what is it?

a celebration of canadian textiles for everyone, from fibreshed newbies to old pros! general rules of thumb are as follows:

  • *textiles used must primarily be sourced from and manufactured/processed from a local fibreshed (i.e. both warp and weft of a weaving should use locally grown and milled yarns, knitting/crochet projects may only use local fibres, wool can be milled at an outside mill due to limits and waitlists with current wool mills in canada but should not use any imported fibres, sewing projects should use local leather or fabrics grown, milled, and woven locally and/or use upcycled textiles from your community dyed with locally harvested dyes…)

*as of 2022, we are expanding this to allow use of materials from other fibresheds local to each participant. we encourage everyone to learn more about their local fibresheds, see what gaps exist in local manufacturing vs. what surpluses exist, what traditional textile methods are home to the land you inhabit, and to fill in any necessary gaps you might have for your projects through the support of other fibresheds rather than fast fashion equivalents. use the guidelines above to help guide you in your decisions (re: imported acid-dyed yarns and fabric purchased from jo-ann’s do not count).

  • all textile arts can participate - knitting, crochet, weaving, sewing, macramé…

how do i join in?

just start making! if you use instagram, follow @fromfieldtoskin and @sunflowerknit and use the hashtag #seatoseatoseamal for all your related posts! join the creative coven community for access to northern natural dye plant recipes.

what if i’m not from canada? can i use textiles from my own fibreshed instead?

absolutely! while educational content focuses on the canadian fibreshed, we encourage makers from all over the world to participate and support their local fibresheds in the process!

are there prizes?

not these days, but we think getting involved in your local fibreshed is a prize in and of itself… join us down the rabbit hole!
